Dish of the Day: Cherry Almond Blue Salad from Dole

Behind the Burner: Dish of the Day: Cherry Almond Blue Salad from Dole

Get your salad mixer out, and shake that salad! A salad makes a great lunch and it can also make a great appetizer or side dish for a meal, but nothing is worse than a boring bed of iceberg lettuce with no flavor. Salad shouldn't be dull and it shouldn't be something you eat just to shed a few extra pounds. A delicious salad is bright, colorful, filled with many different tastes and textures. The important thing with making salads at home is to be creative. Think of your lettuce or spinach as a blank page, and decorate it with as many different veggies, fruits, nuts, cheeses, beans and meat that you like.

Distinctively Dole, the all natural Dole Salad Kit is a great way to make a delicious salad. My favorite is Cherry Almond Blue on a bed of spinach. Inside the kit comes fresh spinach with Dole's White Balsamic Vinaigrette, Blue Cheese crumbles, dried cherries, and sliced roasted almonds. Dole suggests enjoying the salad with sweet potatoes and pork tenderloin, but I think it goes great with a white fish like branzino as well.

Tip: Dole makes a variety of different lettuce and salads. Mix some Dole arugula into your salad to add an extra kick to Cherry Almond Bleu.

Behind the Burner: Dish of the Day: Heart Healthy Salads from Tossed

This February, the only heart you should be concerned about is your own! The month of February is being offered as a tribute and renamed American Heart Month. During these 28 (not 29) days of the month, we are taking the time to recognize the havoc that heart disease wreaks on our society and finding a way to fight back.

The best way we know how to fight back is to make healthy choices when it comes to food. Tossed, a garden salad, wrap, and sandwich franchise (located on Park Avenue in NYC) is helping Americans with their struggle against heart disease by offering a healthy alternative to a greasy burger at lunch. With over 50 fresh choices of veggies, fruits, and gourmet dressing, it's easy to do your heart a favor without disappointing your taste buds. Tossed is a great place to use your creative side and get heart healthy!

Tip: Start Spring early with this healthy salad recommendation from Tossed: baby spinach, sliced fresh strawberries, chopped bacon, broccoli, sugar snap peas, and red onion tossed in a strawberry vinaigrette.

Wine of the Day: Girasole Vineyards 2009 Pinot Blanc

Behind the Burner: Wine of the Day: Girasole Vineyards 2009 Pinot Blanc

Although the worst of the summer heat has come and gone, I still crave a chilled glass of wine when I stumble through the door after a long trek home. That's why Girasole Vineyard's Pinot Blanc, a certified organic wine, has become my greatest indulgence after a long day's work.

Made from grapes grown at the headwaters of the Russian River in Northern California, they are also hand-picked from the family owned and operated vineyards that date back to the 1950's (not to mention all grapes are Certified Organic by California Certified Organic Farmers, or CCOF). If you've never tried Pinot Blanc, expect dry-but-fruity flavors of pear, citrus and apricot with light mineral undertones— in other words, refreshment in a glass.

Tip: This Pinot Blanc pairs really well with most summer salads, especially this Killer Swiss and Romaine Salad. The crisp romaine will bring out the flavors of the Pinot Blanc without overwhelming it.

Dish of the Day: Eggplant Baladi at Grill Bar in Jerusalem, Israel

Behind the Burner: Dish of the Day: Eggplant Baladi at Grill Bar in Jerusalem, Israel

A creamy dish that can be eaten with a fork or simply spread over pita, Eggplant Baladi is a delicious side to any Mediterranean meal. The texture was unexpected (so much creamier than I would have thought), but it was delicious all the same. I had a hard time trying to stop eating since the meal was seemingly endless. At Grill Bar in Jerusalem, when you order salad with your meal, it keeps on coming. Israeli salad is not traditional by American standards— it consists of mini-plates of different veggies and dips to mix. Once you finish up the glazed carrots or roasted peppers, the waiter comes with a fresh plate of each, along never-ending pita.

At Grill Bar, tourists and locals alike enjoy home-style cooked meats, kebabs, casseroles, salads and side dishes. Grill Bar boasts "Israeli simplicity combined with a high aesthetic level," and aims to embody the beautiful spirit of Jerusalem.
