Dessert of the Day: Morticia from Melt Bakery

Behind the Burner: Dessert of the Day: Morticia from Melt Bakery

Now that we've rung in the New Year, it's about time to ring in some new food trends as well. And this year, we're backing away from cupcakes and moving towards an old-school dessert that everyone craves now and again: homemade ice cream sandwiches from Melt Bakery .

Melt Bakery specializes in ice cream sandwiches in countless flavors. Now, I know that doesn't sound impressive, but because of how delectable both Melt Bakery's ice cream and cookies are, it is. With over 20 oddly named combinations of cookies and ice cream flavors, there seem to be no limits to what you can order, and there is something for everyone. From a traditional sugar cookie with vanilla ice cream to a coconut cookie with passion fruit ice cream, Melt's really makes this boring dessert exciting and creative. They even deliver!

I recently had the Morticia. I found the name intriguing and the contents of the dessert more than satisfying. The Morticia is made from creamy Malted Chocolate Rum Ice Cream in between two moist Crackly Chocolate Cookies, a mouthwatering combination.

Tip: Skip the cupcakes and serve ice cream sandwiches as treats for your next party!

Dessert of the Day: Chozen All Natural Ice Cream

Behind the Burner: Dessert of the Day: Chozen All Natural Ice Cream

Despite the cooling weather, there has yet to be a moment where I do not find myself craving ice cream. Not the decadently rich, possibly poisonous Coldstone Creamery kind, but a more subtle kind that is filled with flavor rather than chemicals and artificial dyes. And being a New Yorker, I've always loved Jewish pastries. Chozen All Natural Ice Cream combines both together in a frozen kosher treat. The title is clever and the mix-ins even more so; favorites include Ronnie's Rugelach, Matzoh Crunch and Chocolate Babka. Started by the three Jewish sisters, the desserts are inspired by their childhood and based on family recipes. They call it an ice cream with "chutzpah," and boy, is it ever!

Trick: Mix Ronnie's Rugelach ice cream, which is filled with cinnamon and homemade raisin pastry from Brooklyn, with the Apples & Honey flavor. It's like having a frozen apple turnover...I'm completely addicted.
