Wine of the Day: Cupcake Vineyards Yakima Valley Riesling

Behind the Burner: Wine of the Day: Cupcake Vineyards Yakima Valley Riesling

When I think of a cupcake, I'm usually reminded of rich cake topped with mounds of sugary frosting. Yet, despite the name of Cupcake Vineyards' Riesling, this wine tastes like anything but a decadent dessert. Instead, it reminds me of a lighter treat, such as fruit salad with whipped cream (which it would pair very well with). I was very pleasantly surprised with the palatable yet tangy combination of flavors in this hassle free, twist off cap wine bottle.

Each sip of begins with hints of floral flavor with but has a dry finish and creamy texture. Cupcake's Riesling achieves a delicate balance of light, citrusy flavors while incorporating aromas reminiscent of buttery lemon cake.

Tip: With subtle and fruity citrus notes such as pineapple and guava, this wine complements Asian dishes nicely.

Wine of the Day: 2006 Sheldrake Point Reserve Riesling

Behind the Burner: Wine of the Day: 2006 Sheldrake Point Reserve Riesling

This estate-grown reserve dry Riesling emits a nuttiness amidst mild flavors of green tea, apples, citrus and herbal notes. Pop the cork and inhale soft, sweet floral aromas among sweet tropical fruits. Because Riesling is almost never fermented, its light flavor, acidity and sweetness goes well with a wide variety of foods. More specifically, Reisling pairs beautifully with white fish and pork; it also stands up well to the intense flavors and rich spices of Thai and Chinese cooking.

Tip: Cabbage is often cooked with Riesling to reduce the vegetables unfavorable smell.
