Behind the Burner: The Classic Hamburger by Divya Gugnani

Makes 4 servings

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 lb. ground chuck or sirloin
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 egg
4 slices American cheese
1 large onion, sliced in rings
4 hamburger buns, cut in half and toasted
1 large tomato, sliced
4 lettuce leaves
4 dill-pickle chips

PREPARATION:

1. Combine beef, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce and egg

2. Form four round patties

3. Cook patties on the grill (or in a skillet) over high heat for about four minutes for medium or five minutes for well done, turning once midway through

4. Place one slice of cheese on top of each burger and cook them for 1 more minute

5. Reduce heat to medium, add onions and cook, stirring them occasionally, until they are golden brown

6. Top each burger tomato, lettuce, pickles and onions
