French Toast Breakfast Casserole by Divya Gugnani

Makes 4-6 servings
INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 round loaf country-style bread
5 large eggs
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
PREPARATION:
1. In a small heavy saucepan melt butter with brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until smooth and set aside.
2. Cut the bread into 1-inch slices, then place in a glass casserole dish in a single layer, overlapping the ends slightly.
3. Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla and salt until well combined and pour evenly over bread. Cover the mixture and chill for 1 hour.
4. Preheat oven to 350° F, meanwhile bringing bread mixture to room temperature. Drizzle the sugar mixture over the top of the bread.
5. Bake until puffed and edges are pale golden, 35 to 40 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve.
