Expert Interview: Lisa Lillien

Behind the Writer

Are you a nutritionist?
No, I'm not a nutritionist. I'm just hungry.

What makes Hungry Girl unique? How is it different from other books and websites?
Hungry Girl is unique because I'm not a nutritionist and the Hungry Girl approach is a little more relatable and down to earth than many of the other books and websites out there. It's also fun and funny — two things that are uncommon in the dieting world.

What are the latest trends in the field of nutrition and dietetics?
Lately I've been seeing so many foods with added fiber and probiotics. Those are the most common trends. And of course portion control. But let's hope portion control isn't a trend and that it's here to stay!

What does your daily diet consist of?
I eat a lot of lean meats like turkey and chicken, egg whites or Eggbeaters, low-fat dairy, veggies, fruit, and sushi. On any given day, I'll typically eat an egg white scramble with Laughing Cow light cheese, a veggie-packed salad with lean meat, a Fuji apple, fruit salad, sushi, and probably a Vitatop. I also eat a lot of high fiber, low-calorie tortillas.

What are your beverages of choice?
I drink a lot of water. If I want a soda, I'll go for a Coke Zero. I've also been drinking a lot of Crystal Light Lemonade lately.

How do you feel about fad diets?
Fad diets can serve a purpose for some, but for the most part, I think they're not a good idea because they are more about temporary change than long term change. And I think losing and maintaining weight is forever. It's about changing your lifestyle than changing your eating habits for a limited period of time.

If there was one food you could ban from our diets, what would it be?
Probably sugary sodas. What a waste of calories for the world at large!

When you are dining out, what meal choices do you gravitate towards?
Sushi! Also, grilled chicken, steamed veggies, huge salads

You consider yourself a "foodologist".What does that mean?
It just means I love food. I think about it a lot and study it.

What are your favorite low calorie snacks?
I love Vitalicious VitaTops and Fuji apples. Those are probably my two favorites.

What is your philosophy on carbohydrates?
I tend to avoid "starchy carbs" for the most part because they make me eat more. They're a trigger food for me personally. I do eat a lot of carbohydrates in fruits and veggies. And I don't think carbohydrates are evil. All carbs are not created equally.

I want to lose weight, should I take diet pills?
No. I am anti diet pills 100%.

Can vitamins replace the nutrients we are supposed to get from food?
I'm not a nutritionist or a medical professional so I am not the best person to answer that question. My personal feeling is that vitamins help but you should be eating a balanced diet.

What should I eat to boost my energy level?
Again, not being a medical professional, I can only give you my personal opinion on what foods I think help me feel more energized. When I need a boost, I grab a handful of almonds, or some carrots or an apple.

If you were to teach us all one good rule about healthy eating what would it be?
Basically that you need to really watch out for the hidden fat and calories that are lurking everywhere. Whether its the butter surrounding your egg white veggie omelette, the oil your grilled veggies are holding onto for dear life, or the 400 calories of fatty dressing on your salad — be careful. Order everything on the side whenever possible.
