Expert Interview: Enrique Chueca
General Manager, Rose Vineyard
When did you first become interested in wine?
I almost don't remember it has been so long! Wine was in my blood. My father was a vintner, a winemaker, and I grew up in this area so it was something natural. I worked outside of the wine industry for a little while at the beginning of my career but ultimately became involved since it was unavoidable for me-- it was my destiny. And that was 25 years ago.
What brought you into the wine business?
The desire to have people enjoy wine as part of a meal, as part of being with friends. Moments that are important to people when they are with others are better with wine. It brings people together. There are more stories, more memories when good company has good wine. And the company makes the wine better. They reinforce each other.
Do you have a favorite varietal or region?
Garnacha! It's a good wine for the young people since it is soft and easy. My favorite one is Garnacha from here, it is Coto de Hayas, Garnacha Centenaria, 2007, which is 100 percent Garnacha.
What is the first thing someone learning about wine should know?
Everyone is interested in wine! Everyone enjoys learning about it. The most important thing a young person can learn is to analyze the aromas. Young people accustomed to sodas need to pause for a moment and smell the wine. The aroma can tell so much but only if you stop to think about it. I also recommend that people try the actual grape--taste it and smell it--so they know where the wine comes from.
What wines should no home be without?
Fagus, Garnacha 2004. It can be enjoyed with or without food and is my favorite gift for people.
