After a recent shooting of Man v. Food in Syracuse, the town has become quite a bit more hopping these days when it comes to the dining scene. Although the city's "grubstreet" is now talk of the town, places like Dinosaur Bar-B-Que and Mother's Cupboard have been drawing in endless crowds for years now, and it's not just for the pulled pork or the frittatas.
Host Adam Richman should have focused more on Dino's fried green tomatoes rather than just a pork platter. Freshly fried tomatoes paired with Pecorino Romano cheese and smothered with a cayenne buttermilk ranch dressing, and you may want to remain in the 'Cuse, even when the first October snow hits.
Tip: Nothing goes better with these fried greens other than an ice-cold beer. Skip the cheap Bud Light and opt for Dino's Ape Hanger Ale from Syracuse's very own Middle Ages Brewery. I can assure you'll be in high spirits.
The Earthbound Cook is an amazing cookbook filled with tidbits of culinary know-how, beautiful photography and, of course, recipes. The dishes are healthy (and delicious!) with a minimal carbon footprint. Author Myra Goodman celebrates the pleasures of fresh, nutritious food with healthy and simple recipes. While flipping through this book, you'll catch a glimpse of fresh fruits and vegetables, dishes with meat and fish, and decadent desserts that won't devastate your diet or the planet. You'll learn everything from Goodman's six reasons to protect our oceans to the six steps to making crepes. She covers her cooking bases by providing readers with the entire lifecycle of their food, such as great tips for roasting vegetables, the basics of composting and even discusses the dangers of nitrates and nitrites. This multipurpose book is a must-have for any kitchen, whether you're looking for culinary knowledge, ways to save the environment or just a delicious recipe (Warm Citrus Compote, anyone? Refer to page 385), The Earthbound Cook has got it all.
If you've been keeping up with Top Chef: Just Desserts, you already know about last night's drama with Cheftestant Malika Ameen. Her daring delicacies may look sweet on TV, but lucky for you, they're now available to taste in person.
Although her stint on TV may have come to an end, her new business, ByMdesserts, is only just beginning. Malika creates "Couture Cookies" made with quality ingredients such as Saigon cinnamon and cardamom. They are crunchy, chewy and soft in all the right places, making for a truly delightful bite after a meal (or before, your choice...)
Tip: Try the Walnut Cardamom cookies (my favorite), but be sure to keep a stack of napkins handy! These cookies are covered in a delicious vanilla bean powdered sugar that's just too tasty not to lick straight off the cookie, but will make it look like you got in a fight with a chalk board.
Made from Irish Whiskey, fresh dairy cream and natural flavors, Baileys Irish Cream is one tempting liqueur that has seduced our cocktails (and coffees!) since 1971. Those with a sophisticated palate and penchant for chocolate will be hard pressed not to fall in love with the Baileys Chocolatini— a sumptuous cocktail, or should we say, dessert in a glass. Awesome for entertaining, a perfect nightcap. Tip: For an extra cocoa kick, substitute regular vodka for Godiva's tasty new Chocolate Infused Vodka.
If we haven't wooed you yet, here's a little more sugar. Tell Baileys why you want to go home for the holidays and how you'll enjoy their famous cream liqueur, and you could win one of 250 round-trip tickets! Check out the Baileys Brings You Home Project on Facebook— 25 winners are picked weekly now through Dec 10.
I have never understood the appeal of peanut butter. I am always hiding from peanut butter sandwiches, snacks and especially peanut butter breath. I have always opted to mix my jelly with cream cheese, a childhood favorite, until I was recently introduced to Better'n Peanut Butter.
Better'n Peanut Butter is not only outrageously smooth, tasty and creamy, but also is a healthier alternative for original peanut butter. This snack is still made from freshly ground peanuts and natural sweeteners like rice syrup. And with only 100 calories per serving, 40% less calories than original peanut butter, and 85% less fat, there's no reason not to indulge in this snack— guilt free.
Tip: As a substitute for a high-calorie desert, my personal favorite way to eat this snack is to add a generous topping of dark chocolate chips to a big spoonful of Better'n Peanut Butter to satisfy my sweet tooth.
