Tips for a Healthy Halloween

Behind the Burner: Tips for a Healthy Halloween

While Halloween is a festive time of trick-or-treating and parties, many of us dread the holiday and all of its sugary offerings. With Halloween upon us and Thanksgiving and Christmas/Hanukkah just around the corner, here are some tips on how to enjoy Halloween (and the holidays) without over indulging:

Fill up. Before heading out the door, satiate yourself or your trick-or-treaters with a healthy snack (peanut butter and yogurt are good options) or real food with protein. You'll feel satisfied and less tempted to reach for the candy and high-calorie party foods.

Moderate. Don't deny yourself that puff pastry or cupcake. Allow yourself to have just one and then walk away or have your children sort out their favorite candies and allow them a limited amount each day.

Discriminate. Instead of hitting the dessert tray, place yourself near the veggies, cold cuts or popcorn and munch on these lower-calorie options. If you're concerned there'll be no low-cal spread at the party, bring your own!

Get busy. Curb mindless eating or pecking by keeping your mouth or hand occupied. Chew on some sugar-free gum, suck on a hard candy or lozenge, or hold onto a glass of water or seltzer throughout the night.

Toss it. Don't leave candy hanging around the house. Either throw it out or store some in freezer for later use such as baking.

Share. Donate extra treats to a local shelter or senior centers or give them to your doorman or co-workers. They'll love you for it!

Happy Healthy Halloweening!
