The Farm on Adderley: Seasonal, Satisfying Fare in Ditmas Park

Behind the Burner: The Farm on Adderley: Seasonal, Satisfying Fare in Ditmas Park

If the neighborhood of Ditmas Park is not on your dining destination list yet, get thee to a Q train and fast. South of Prospect Park, sandwiched between Coney Island Avenue and Ocean Avenue, the Cortelyou Road Q stop is steps away from some of Brooklyn's best eating. From steaming momos >at to chicken enchiladas to die for at Cinco de Mayo, Cortelyou Road has more on offer than even the heartiest eater could consume in one visit.

While there are plenty of places in the neighborhood to land for a quick bite, if you're looking to sit a spell, nowhere will you receive a warmer welcome than The Farm on Adderley, where locals and locally-sourced foods appear in equal measure. In the ample, unpretentious dining room, there is an unrushed, genuine quality to the service. No matter how busy the restaurant gets—and it's often packed even on weeknights--waiters and waitresses linger long enough for a friendly exchange and check back frequently as your meal progresses. Crisp, perfectly calibrated cocktails (I'm partial to the Sadie Lou) and a solid wine list precede dishes that are crafted with careful attention to seasonal ingredients. Chef Tom Kearney's menu is simple yet inventive, ranging from, on a recent night, an acorn squash tart to the reliably wonderful standard, a burger on an English muffin, complete with addictively good fries.

Elsewhere in Brooklyn, neighborhood favorites come and go, but I hope The Farm is in it for the long haul. Other restaurants would do well to take note of The Farm's dual successes: a fail-proof go-to for a great meal, and no less than a community center. As of this month, they'll be serving breakfast, and reservations are available for what's sure to be a cozy Thanksgiving meal.
