S'more Nostalgia
There is something about the word autumn that sparks all five of my senses. The slight nip in the air, the picture of fall colors not only of the leaves on the ground, but those in the comfy bowls of stew on the dinner table, and of course the smell of fireplaces coming out of hibernation.
Just this past weekend, my family and I indulged in the interactive dessert treat, the s'more. In years past, due to the lack of proper fire source, the four of us would stand around a gas burner in the kitchen in order to achieve the full charring effect necessary to make the perfect marshmallow sandwich. Today, we have our very own fireplace to work with, chimney and all.
To follow tradition from my own childhood, we used wire hangers [Joan Crawford rolls over in her grave] to use to hold our marshmallows over the fire. Each of us like our marshmallows roasted just about the same burned with fully covering every area of the marshmallow. This can be achieved by setting fire to one side of the marshmallow, extinguishing, and repeating on the other side.
For as delicious as a marshmallow brûlée is on its own, to officially be considered a s'more you have to sandwich it between graham crackers and half of a Hershey's chocolate bar. I advise that you get your cracker and chocolate assembled prior to the roasting process. It can be a little tricky trying to juggle your cooked marshmallow while attempting to get all the pieces of the sandwich built.
There is something special about the equation of burned marshmallow, milk chocolate, and the slight ginger honey flavor from the graham cracker. Though every morsel of this seasonal dessert comes from the "processed foods" aisle, indulging once (or twice) a year on a s'more leaves me with happy memories and sticky hands. With each ooey gooey bite, I feel like I am on the same euphoric level as my step kids.
