Dish of the Day: Quatro Leoni's Pear Ravioli
Pasta. Pears. Never thought I would have the two together. But after eating about every pasta dish imaginable in the magical city of Florence, Italy, I decided to go for it. Located on Via de' Vellutini, a bit of a way off the straight path (get a map) is Quatro Leoni, or what used to be a brothel in Old Florence (who knew something delicious could come from some place so dirty, eh?)
Quatro Leoni's pear ravioli, or Fiocchetti di Pera in Salsa di Taleggio e Asparagi, as read on the menu, is truly out of this world (or just out of the United States). The delicious Italian taleggio cheese gives off a rich flavor with a fruity component that balances perfectly with the pear pasta. Topped with seasoned asparagus and loaded with fresh grated Parmesan, each bite of the ravioli bursts with pear sweetness and creamy cheese. The dish is yet another reminder of why Italy exceeds in the culinary world.
Tip: Always order the house wine, or vino de casa, when eating out in bella Italia. It is not only the best, but also the cheapest. A Chianti red is also a perfect choice to pair with your pear pasta!
