7 Tips to Kick the Blues Out of Your Winter
February is right around the corner and the winter blues are starting to kick in. Even if you're outside on a daily basis, the lack of UV rays can seriously lower your energy level. Rather than have 3 cups of coffee or a Coke, try boosting your body by reaching for good-for-you foods that pack a surprising punch.
1. Eat foods rich in natural Vitamin D, such as mushrooms, eggs, salmon and milk. Salmon is known to calm the skin and make it glow, which would boost your esteem as well!
2. Leafy greens are the way to go! Green foods have lots of nutrients and minerals that perk up the body and get it up and raring to go for the day.
3. Enjoy "Superfoods" such as beans, oranges, yogurt, pumpkin, spinach, bananas, turkey, walnuts and green tea. All are delicious and easily accessible. Keep tea in your drawer at work and spinach in your fridge for a quick salad or to throw a turkey sandwich (with whole grain bread, of course!)
4. Stay far away from soda. The sugary beverage will only take you on a sugar bender and leave you crashed and burnt out at your desk or living room couch. Instead, try seltzer water in different flavors (Poland Spring is a good one) if you need the fizz or sip on natural, organic juices such as carrot or POM.
5. High-energy foods like whole grains and lean meats will fill you up quick, not cause you to overeat and boost your energy level. By filling you up they are less likely to encourage you to splurge on.
6. Omega-3 fatty acids are great for warding off depression. They're found in most fish and come in supplement form as well. If you can, try to eat them in natural foods!
7. Keep healthy comfort foods to have on hand for stressful and dreary days, so you aren't tempted by takeout or packaged goods. Try oatmeal, deli turkey, prewashed veggies, fruit, whole grain crackers, peanut butter (almond butter would work for this too), nuts and popcorn.
