Summer Sizzle: 5 Tips on How to Grill a Steak

Behind the Burner: Summer Sizzle: 5 Tips on How to Grill a Steak

We get it. Not everyone knows how to grill a steak. But really, it's not rocket science—even though some grill masters make it seem like that. This summer, get up and grill with ease!

1. Try to purchase your steaks fresh on the day you want to grill them. If this is not possible try to keep them in the freezer as short as possible. Tip: Do not defrost your steaks at room temperature or in warm water, and especially not in a microwave! Refrigerator defrosting is best.

2. If defrosting in the fridge, take your steaks out of the refrigerator about an hour before grilling. Trick: Cover the steaks in plastic wrap to ensure they are at room temperature when they go on the grill.

3. Season your steak! Tip: Using salt will actually enhance the true natural flavor of the steak. If you chose to season with salt, use kosher salt and apply a small portion to the meat, immediately before placing the steaks on the hot grill.

4. Master the grill in no time. For gas grills preheat on high for 20 minutes. Charcoal grills are ready when the coals are covered in white ash. Technique: Try not to use lighter fluid to ignite the coals, as they may end up on the actual steak.

5. Sear the steak by placing the steaks on the grill and cooking for about three minutes on each side on the highest heat setting. Trick: Always make sure the lid is closed when searing. Reduce the heat to medium high to finish cooking.

For charcoal grills move the coals to the outside of the grill leaving the middle open. Continue cooking according to your preference.
