Behind the Burner: See You at CU29 Copper

CU29 Copper is a cute and cozy restaurant located right across from McCarren Park in Williamsburg. It offers a mix of Mexican, Italian, and American food, which at first seems random, but is actually quite practical - there is something for everyone. And no, the vast menu doesn't take away from the quality of the dishes, which were delicious across the board. I should mention that I have a soft spot for wood-burning ovens, and Copper's is a beauty. Visible from the entrance, it adds to the restaurant's romantic ambiance and the flavor of many of the menu items.

Though everything we tasted at CU29 Copper was simply put “delish”, one major highlight for me was the Grinch Pizza with Brussels sprouts, bacon, and cheese. The name is a bit silly, but there is nothing frivolous about this pizza - it's seriously tasty. It's a combination that I wish I’d thought of in my own kitchen - though being cooked in a wood-burning oven certainly helps make it stand out. Plus the cheese is so meltey, and who doesn’t love meltey cheese?

We also tried the slow-roasted pork special, which I hope for everyone’s sake, becomes a regular on the menu. I am not a big fan of pork, but this dish has me seriously rethinking that. The meat was impeccably cooked by Chef Rolando, plus it spent some time charring in the wood-burning oven. Everything was elegantly plated on a bed of black bean puree and garnished with chimichurri, fried plantains, and fresh avocados. The garnishes were well-tailored to the pork, allowing for a combination of flavors that continuously kept us racing back to the plate.

For dessert, I recommend the Tiramisu, with its perfect ratio of espresso and chocolate flavors combined in a light yet indulgent dessert. Last but not least, try the Mojito, which you can get after-hours because Copper’s bar stays open late.

While this is a great spot for a date, it is also surprisingly casual and neighborhood-oriented. Plus the menu offers great variety and value, the staff is friendly and informative, and the food is terrific. Oh, and did i mention that they have an outdoor patio?

Tip of the Night: Kathy, co-owner, makes her crepe batter the night before and refrigerates it overnight. Her trick to give it some kick? She adds a shot of vodka to her batter. And you should take one too, while the vodka’s out. Cheers!
