Pizza Roma: Crust you Can Trust
When walking down Bleecker Street, it’s safe to say that every restaurant is nestled between cute stores and little bakeries. Each dinner spot is more charming than the next, so how do you choose just one? I suppose you could eat one course per restaurant and hit three or four in one night, but that’s just a hassle. Sweet, witty names painted on antique wooden signs poke over the sidewalk, while wine glasses are being filled in the window. Talk about cute overload.
But let’s get down to business — pizza business, that is. Everyone has their favorite cheese, sauce, toppings and, of course, crust, from pizza places they claim are the BEST. But it’s time to shake up your normal pizza routine because I’ve found the perfect crust. I can hear you all yelling at me already. Believe me, I wouldn’t make such a bold statement if I didn’t mean it. Pizza Roma, one of Bleecker’s adorable restaurants, has set a new standard for crust. By allowing the dough to rise for 96 hours, the crust is lighter, more digestible and even healthier. It’s perfectly crunchy, yet soft, and its thickness is spot on — too thick for thin crust and too thin for thick crust. The light and airy base brings the slice — or in my case, pie — to life, prompting diners to “ooh” and “ahh” after each taste. After crunching into my first bite, I noticed the cheese-pull attaching me to the piece; pizza and I are clearly meant to be. The sauce was sweet and smooth with the tiniest chunks of tomato. I closed my eyes, as I do when I’m eating great food, and could taste how fresh the ingredients were. As suggested, I ordered a half-artichoke, half-margherita special with Bufala mozzarella. I was so pleased with our waitress’ suggestion that I almost stood up and hugged her. That would have been awkward, so I decided against it.
The simplicity of Pizza Roma’s décor made dinner cozy and relaxing, giving me my first opportunity all day to just unwind. Exposed brick, wine bottles and art with local flare lined the walls, accented with dim lighting. The outdoor garden in the back would be ideal for a warm summer night, but the unfortunate downpour of the evening prevented us from having dinner under the stars.
Between the exceptional food and the mood-setting décor, I will definitely be returning to Pizza Roma, friends in tow.
